Often forgotten to smartwatches benefit, connected clothes are slowly growing on the wearable technologies market. Billie Whitehouse, co-founder and creative director of Wearable Experiments, explains how these clothes can be beneficial to everyone and why do they have a clear future in retail.
Today, most connected cloths are dedicated to fitness (heart rate, breath rate, muscular efforts…) or to babies (sleep monitoring, vital signs…). But associations possibilities between clothes and technology are much wider than that. From the hands-free GPS to the long distance hug, creations are wide and they all can be used daily. Billie Whitehouse insists of the fact that, to be democratized, these clothes need to be designed just like any other retail collection : if the only good point of a jacket is its functional technology, the target will only be a tech one, whereas, with a fashionable design, the item will be more visible and could be considered by fashion and technology amateurs. A few retail major brands like Nike and The North Face have already entered the wearable market. For Nike, it’s « only » a connect wristband for fitness, ut it’s a first big step. The North Face created two items, one for men and one for women : a connected coat allowing the owner to manage his music from the outside of his sleeve. These brand’s interest for smart clothes clearly shows that there’s a development possibility for the years to come. Billie Whitehouse is convinced that, in a close future, it won’t be unusual to wear connected items daily. She works everyday with different brands to elaborate innovative products that are more than gadgets to consumers. They can answer needs and demands. In her entreprise Wearable Experiments, Billie Whitehouse has been able to create a few models of connected clothes. A GPS jacket which, by the use of vibrations on your left or right shoulder, leads your way in a city while letting you enjoy the view instead of your phone ; Alert Shirt, reproducing what athletes in a live game feel ; or even men and women underwear, Fundawear, allowing couples to stay in touch despite the distance between them. apcnews2012fundawear-couple_mainImage1.jpg1 Most of these creations are made possible by the use of captors and vibrating chips, associated with a mobile application, recognizing the target cloth. Others have created high-tech fitness outfits, though to be the most confortable possible for the athlete, kid sweaters making it possible for parents to hug them from afar, or the famous bra that only opens for true love. Connected cloths have indeed a certain future, at least if major brands accept to get into this market for good. Collections using innovative fabrics could be imagined, limiting the use of captors and chips, working with cloth only for a start with a mobile application, recognizing the target cloth.
